( Zork Journal ) " The Writing Hand "

I look at it again and I drop the need to organize it and then it becomes much simpler, almost blunt, something is moving through the top without ever checking where it is, the hand is already inside the space of the other before anything like attention could arrive, and that’s what stays with me, not the gesture itself but the missing moment before it, the absent pause, as if the whole thing began too late and therefore cannot correct itself anymore, it just continues, and the face does not answer, it only receives the continuation, not actively, not passively, just there, and that lack of differentiation is what makes it dense, not intense, just dense, like something that has no way to thin out

then it thickens again, not because something new happens but because the same thing does not stop, it repeats into itself, the second chamber is not a variation but a weight, a persistence that has lost sensitivity, and I notice that I want to interpret it, to say what it is, but the drawing refuses that, it keeps everything at the level of direction and contact, never meaning, and that refusal is actually precise, because the problem is not meaning, it is that the movement has no internal adjustment, it doesn’t feel where it is, it just goes

when the table appears there is suddenly a different kind of contact, and I feel it immediately in my body, the hand is no longer entering another body, it is meeting a surface that does not absorb it in the same way, the paper does not yield into ambiguity, it records, and that changes everything, the gesture becomes traceable, it leaves something that can be seen again, and that is almost the first moment where I can breathe inside the image, because something holds without being invaded

below that there is only an outline and I realize it is not a reduction but a decision, not drawn during the action but after it, like a line that says this is as far as it goes, and it doesn’t argue, it doesn’t explain, it just stands there, and because it comes after everything above, it has a kind of clarity that the earlier scenes don’t have, they are still inside their own movement, this one is outside of it

the falling field is not dramatic to me, it’s just what happens when too much has accumulated without structure, it breaks into repetition, into vertical marks that don’t organize into anything, they just continue downward until they run out, and the small figure next to it does not intervene, it is almost irrelevant, not because it doesn’t matter but because the process no longer depends on it

and then the bottom, scattered points, and I don’t read them as emptiness or distance, I read them as what remains when nothing is trying to reach anything else, each point is complete in itself, not isolated in a tragic way, just not pulled into relation, and that feels unexpectedly calm, not as a conclusion but as a state that doesn’t demand continuation

so if I stay with it without forcing it into a message, the whole thing moves from a gesture that cannot feel its own limit, through a place where contact becomes measurable, into a line that marks an end, and finally into a field where nothing needs to extend beyond itself, and the only place where something like precision exists is not at the beginning or the end but in that narrow middle where the hand meets something that can hold it without disappearing into it
